happy halloween...

Halloween and the Ghost Head Nebula

Explanation: Halloween's origin is ancient and astronomical. Since the fifth century BC, Halloween has been celebrated as a cross-quarter day, a day halfway between an equinox (equal day / equal night) and a solstice (minimum day / maximum night in the northern hemisphere). With a modern calendar, however, the real cross-quarter day will occur next week. Another cross-quarter day is Groundhog's Day. Halloween's modern celebration retains historic roots in dressing to scare away the spirits of the dead. Perhaps a fitting tribute to this ancient holiday is this view of the Ghost Head Nebula taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Similar to the icon of a fictional ghost, NGC 2080 is actually a star forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way Galaxy. The Ghost Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is shown in representative colors.

sir william

august of 2007, two young spunky blondes lived, worked, played, wondered, and questioned life in the vast city of new york.... one day they came across William Chrome, a poet in every sense of the word, creating poems for people on the street with his type writer....we each provided him with a word as well as a cup of coffee and came back to find this for us:

baths, blue super stars, and etude II....

i never used to be a 'bath person', always was a shower person really...and one is usually one or the other, some say you must take sides...but recently, for some unknown reason, i've started to find i have a love of baths...though fear not showers, i have not forsaken you nor will i ever....now, if only someday i can have a bathtub where my whole body fits in!, because tiny new york/brooklyn bathrooms are not equipped for such a thing....

normally, my dad and i sail up the connecticut river on one of the weekends in october...i was extremely disappointed when i found out it could not happen this year for various reasons (at the beginning of the month i was sick and then it turned out something on the boat needs to be fixed, some sort of mechanical failure, which can fixed only when the boat gets taken out of the water this winter)
instead, here are some pictures i took with my holga camera of our father/daughter sailing trip three octobers ago:

the cloisters

i visited the cloisters, a part of the Met museum and in Fort Tryon Park (way up on 190th street on the west side of new york, its quite a hike to get there!).  i had not been up there for several years and had been wanting to revisit it for sometime now so yesterday was a beautiful day to go up there.  the cloisters are interesting, particularly if you have an interest in medieval art and/or architecture, and fort tryon park surprises you with its beautiful gardens and views of the river and new jersey....

stained glass
was really into this painted box and the stories it told
mysterious creatures with wings and chicken feet
love how abstract the drapery of the fabric was painted
vaulted ceilings
face within the stomach of a demon creature
the last unicorn
sweet tights.... also incredible textiles
magic plants
plants used by artists

what those medieval folks thought of hell
monkeys building a table

cmj

i only caught two cmj concerts this week but both were great; one being Devotchka playing at the Ace Hotel during my lunch break on Friday (was too short of a show, being only four songs, but was a great intimate venue), the second being a band playing in a plastic bubble the size of my apartment on a roof in Williamsburg (the plastic bubble being blown in by the wind as the music played made you feel as if you were inside a living organism, somethings stomach!)

roofs and gardens...

this past sunday my parents were in town and we visited the met roof for the Doug and Mike Starn bamboo installation and then we headed up to 105th street to visit the Conservatory Garden, a part of Central park....
both very different, both very beautiful on a gorgeous day, and both well worth a visit
the bamboo exhibit is only up for a limited amount of time (it's cool but the cool factor only lasts for so long) but the Conservatory Garden is worth visiting anytime (spring, summer, and fall being the best) and it makes you feel as though you are in a European garden....
